Types of Irreversible Dementia

After eliminating other causes of memory loss, a physician will consider irreversible dementias as possible diagnoses. Types of irreversible dementia include:

  • Alzheimer's disease
  • vascular dementia
  • dementia with Lewy bodies
  • frontotemporal dementia (Pick’s disease, for example)
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Huntington's disease

Other possible causes of irreversible dementia include infectious diseases (such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease) and amnesia.
