Factors that increase risk for sleep apnea include the following:

  • Alcohol use
  • High blood pressure
  • Large neck or collar size (17 inches of circumference or greater in men, 16 inches for women)
  • Large tongue, which can seal off your airway
  • Large tonsils and adenoids
  • Male gender
  • Obesity
  • Older age
  • Smoking
