Research about Febrile Seizures
Ongoing studies are being performed to help determine if environmental or genetic factors increase the risk for febrile seizures. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), more research is needed regarding the potential link between maternal smoking and alcohol use during pregnancy and febrile seizures.
Additional research is being conducted to help physicians determine which children may be at risk for complex febrile seizures and to evaluate the long-term effects of febrile seizures on intelligence and behavior. Studies also are being performed to develop new medicines to treat and prevent febrile seizures.
