Before you down that cocktail, consider the number of calories you may be consuming. Alcoholic beverages and sodas are among the top sources of calories in the United States, yet they don't satisfy your hunger or offer much in the way of nutrition.
One 12-ounce can of regular soda has about 150 calories. The same amount of nonalcoholic fruit punch has about 200 calories and a 5-ounce glass of wine has about 120 calories.
Your best bet is to limit yourself to one or two alcoholic or sugary beverages a day and stick with calorie-free drinks such as water, seltzer, or unsweetened tea the rest of the time.
