We sampled only items that were introduced in 2011 and had our staff editors, writers and designers test them first for taste. Our panel of registered dietitians then examined our choices to make sure they fell within acceptable nutrition parameters.
Each item had to have:
• 500 calories or less for meals (200 calories or less for snacks)
• 6 grams of fat or less
• 1 gram of fiber or more,
• no more than 19 grams of sugar
The exceptions: nuts and yogurt. Nuts are naturally high in heart-healthy fat, and yogurt doesn’t normally contain fiber unless it’s added.
