Warming up increases blood flow to the heart and loosens up joints and muscles. To warm up, walk slowly or march in place for a few minutes. At the end of your walk, slow down gradually over a five-minute period to gently decrease your heart rate to resting level. Do a few simple stretching exercises after a walk to prevent muscle soreness or strain.
