Mussels are a good source of omega-3s and iron.


2 teaspoon butter
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 ½ cups dark beer (such as brown ale or porter)
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 pounds mussels, scrubbed


In a pot over medium heat, heat butter and cook garlic, stirring for 1 minute. Add beer, stir in cayenne, bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Add mussels, cover and steam 4 to 5 minutes. Discard any unopened mussels. Serve with broth ladled over mussels.
