Signs and Symptoms of Pleural Effusion

The most common symptoms of pleural effusion are shortness of breath and chest pain. Signs of pleural effusion are caused by compression of the lungs.

In some cases, cough also can occur, and there may be high fever with chills and sweating—empyema.
