Low Blood Sugar Signs & Symptoms

Living with diabetes is a balancing act between keeping blood sugar levels in check and avoiding hypoglycemia—when levels are 70 mg/dL or lower, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Hypoglycemia symptoms include

  • sweating,
  • dizziness,
  • nervousness,
  • confusion and
  • weakness.

Surprisingly, some people don't notice hypoglycemia when it occurs. Called hypoglycemia unawareness, the condition happens most commonly in people who

  • have frequent bouts of low blood sugar,
  • have had diabetes for many years, or
  • tightly control their blood glucose levels.

Talk to your doctor about what to do to recognize symptoms of low blood sugar before the condition becomes a problem.
