Lose Weight, Boost Mood?

Nature Walk Image

Walking in the great outdoors may be good for your mind as well as your waistline. A study of nearly 2,000 walkers in the UK found that people who had recently experienced a stressful life event—such as an illness, a divorce or the death of a family member—had an improved mood after participating in group nature walks.

According to the researchers, joining an outdoor walking group may promote daily positive emotions as well as help combat serious mental illnesses like depression.

To find a walking group near you, check with your local nature center or contact the American Volkssport Association (www.ava.org).
